 North
Queensland is world famous as a destination for keen fisher people.
All types of fishing is available from deep sea reef fishing to
estuary, to freshwater, to fly fishing for marlins (believe it or
not). The Great Barrier Reef waters are
rich and abundant with hard fighting and very tasty fish of all
descriptions.
Professional
fishing charters are available throughout North Queensland. They
are quite affordable and they can cater for your particular interest.
You can charter the entire boat or simply join a vessel going out
for the day.
Hire
boats, house boats and live aboard yacht charters are another way
to spend lazy days fishing in superb locations such as the Whitsunday
Islands, Hinchinbrook Island
and the Daintree River.
Lure
fishing is particularly popular. This is an art form. After losing
4 or 5 lures all worth about $15 each you soon realise that it is
not as easy as it first appears. Lures are very effective on most
of the popular species such as barramundi, mangrove jack, finger
mark and trevally.
 Lake
Tinaroo, west of Cairns on the
Atherton Tableland
is one of the few places where you can fish for barramundi all year
round. This large man made lake has been stocked with these prized
fighting fish over 15 years. Lake Tinaroo holds the record for the
largest Barramundi
ever caught. This monster weighed over 24 kilogrammes. Fish of this
quality are caught reasonably often.
People
catching bait with cast nets are a common site on the tidal flats
on the Cairns Esplanade. Live bait such
as prawns, herring and other small school fish are said to be the
best.
There
are over 100 boat ramps in North Queensland. They all have information
on bag limits and safe boating protocol for that particular area.
They also carry warning about Saltwater or Estuarine Crocodiles,
animals that enjoy the same environment as barramundi, mangrove
jacks, cods and salmon.
Most
hotels will gladly cook up your fish. There is nothing more satisfying
than enjoying a coral trout meal fresh from the Great
Barrier Reef. Don't worry if you have a bad day on the boat.
There are plenty of seafood restaurants
in and around Cairns to satisfy
even the biggest seafood appetite.
